Struggling Valencia thrashed defending champions Real Madrid 4-1 at the Mestalla Stadium in a controversial match that saw Carlos Soler score a hat trick of penalties on Sunday night.
Karim Benzema scored the opening goal for the Whites in the 23rd minute with a beautiful shot from outside the box. Lucas Vasquez conceded a penalty 7 minutes later with a handball. Thibaut Courtois saved Soler’s spot-kick, and Yunus Musah scored the rebound, but the goal was chalked off due to encroachment. Soler made no mistake with the retake of the penalty. Blancos defender Raphael Varane then scored a bizarre own goal in the 43rd minute. The referee then awarded the host another controversial penalty for a Marcelo foul, and Soler slotted home from 12-yards. After the hour mark, Ramos handled the ball in the 18-yard and the referee awarded another penalty and Soler scored his hat trick of penalties.
With that win, Valencia moved into the top 10 of the La Liga table, while Real Madrid missed a chance to go back to second on the log, while their inconsistencies continue.
